1. NATA Hit the Hill Day- Monday, February 26, 2007

Over 200 athletic trainers and athletic training students will be descending upon Capitol Hill for the NATA's Annual "Hit the Hill Day"
on Monday, February 26th...we will be represented by District One Committee Chairs Rick Burr (Governmental Affairs); Joe Scott (CIC), Scott Andrews
(Committee on Revenue), Rob Lawton (Council on Employment) and other members from District One representing all states...I will also be attending...

The Committee Chairs and myself are asking the membership to contact their elected officials before next Monday, to let them know about the bill before we 'Hit the Hill" on Monday...go to the NATA webpage (www.nata.org <http://www.nata.org> ), scroll down the cover page to the lower right corner, where you'll find "Legislative Alert Center"...you can send either e-mails or letters to your senators and representatives directly, as well as get up-to date legislative information...it takes less than five minutes...you can also find out when your legislators have office hours in your hometowns...

At this time, please refer to the bill's title (Access to Physical Medicine and Rehabilitative Services Improvement Act) rather that the number (S3963), which is now obsolete...a new number will be assigned when the bill is re-introduced in the Senate...

NATA will activate its E-blast notices, phone tree system and list-serves upon re-introduction...post cards and petitions are still appreciated, but use the title of the bill until a new number is assigned...

We need to be pro-active and have a positive impact...this is a marathon, not a sprint...thanks!!!

2. Get your NPI Number

NATA strongly encourages all Athletic Trainers to register for their National Provider Identifier number (NPI) „NATA views having an NPI number like having a state license: it‚s a professional requirement and adds credibility to both the individual and the profession,‰ says Cate Brennan Lisak, director of external affairs. „Once ATCs get their NPI number, it will be theirs forever -- no matter where they work. There‚s no downside to having an NPI number.‰ Applying for an NPI number is quick, easy and free. You don‚t have to be in a reimbursement situation to need an NPI number.

The National Provider Identifier is the result of the mandate in the 1996 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) that the Secretary of HHS establish a standard national provider identifier. Though all healthcare providers will be eligible to receive NPI‚s, covered healthcare entities will be mandated to use the NPI as the sole provider identifier on all HIPAA electronic transactions. The 10 digit number will be assigned by a CMS-funded NPI „Enumerator‰ through the NPPES (National Provider and Plan Enumeration System). Recently there has been some federal advisory committee hearings to make HIPAA the standard instead of FERPA!

The NPI is a numeric 10 digit identifier, consisting of 9 numbers plus a check-digit in the 10th position. It is accommodated in all standard transactions and contains no embedded information about the healthcare provider that it identifies.

When filling out your application use:
Provider Code 22 (Respiratory, Rehabilitative & Restorative Service Providers)
and Taxonomy Code 2255A2300X (Athletic Trainer)

our profession on the NATA webpage...a press kit is available on-line...I encourage you to get involved and contact
media in your area, as well as making contact with your school's sports information and media departments and your company's media relations department...

4. CUATC Award Nominations

The College and University Athletic Trainer Committee (CUATC) wishes to recognize those collegiate athletic trainers who have demonstrated exceptional performance as an athletic trainer. All awards will be presented at the annual NATA Symposium during the CUATC program.
