1. Get Well Wishes and Condolences

I want to extend the get well wishes of the District to the following members who have had health issues since the first of the year, and are on the road to recovery:

Jim Bucciarelli- Middlesex Rehab- Watertown, MA
Frank Mastrangelo- Dexter School- Brookline, MA
Rob Burke- Milford High School- Milford, MA
Margie King- Plymouth State University- Plymouth, NH

The thoughts and prayers of the District are extended to the following members who have lost loved ones:

Jennifer Sturtevant- Malden High School/Lawrence Memorial Rehab- Medford, MA
Jen lost her mom, Christine Sturtevant to ovarian cancer in December, 2007, and wanted to honor her by making people aware of this severe type of cancer

Carrie Graham- U. of Connecticut
Carrie lost her uncle, Dr. Eugene Terry, to throat cancer and Alzheimer’s in January, 2008.

2. NATA Action- APTA

By now you’ve probably read about the lawsuit filed by NATA against the APTA and Orthopaedic Section of the APTA relating to APTA’s monopoly of the manual therapy market and other anti-competitive actions over the course of many years.

As athletic trainers, we must stand up and defend our right to practice. This action was taken by the NATA Board of Directors after careful consideration. We believe this lawsuit is necessary to protect the ability of certified athletic trainers to practice consistent with our competencies, scope of practice and licensure.

While we hope it will not occur, if there is workplace retaliation against ATs who work for physical therapists in PT clinics, outpatient and other rehab clinics, hospital clinics and other settings, we do ask you to immediately report any negative workplace circumstances to the NATA. This would include, for example, harassment, job demotion, termination, reduction of job responsibilities or reduced hours. You can report it to the “Fair Practice Hotline” by calling 800-TRY-NATA and ask for the Fair Practice Hotline. Or send an email to info@nata.org and put FAIR PRACTICE in the subject line.

We recognize that this lawsuit might place our dual-credentialed members in an awkward position. We also recognize that in many cases, there is no conflict between practitioners and colleagues in every day work settings because each knows and values what the other brings to the table. The conflict is primarily between the associations, their leadership and staffs.

NATA remains willing to meet with the APTA to discuss a resolution to these issues. NATA attempted to resolve these issues prior to filing the lawsuit, but the APTA was unwilling to seriously address the serious issues NATA raised.

Thank you for your support. I will provide additional information as it is made public.
3. NATA Athletic Training Student and Young Professionals Committees

I have appointed Lauren Ziaks, a student at Northeastern University in Boston, MA as the District One representative to the newly-former Athletic Training Student Committee, and Matt Whalen, Assistant Athletic Trainer at Babson College in Wellesley, MA as the District One Representative of the newly-formed Young Professionals Committee. These appointments are pending the vote of the NATA Board of Directors. Congratulations Lauren and Matt!

4. District One Executive Council Changes & Thanks

I want to thank Gail Connolly for her tenure as District Treasurer. She has been the steward of her finances, and guided our investments well. She has handled her duties with diligence and finesse. Thanks for seven great years!

Congratulations to Paul Ullucci, as he assumes his duties as District Treasurer. He brings experience to the position, and he also the District One Rep for NATAPAC.

At the EATA District Meeting, we recognized several State Presidents whose terms have expired. Special thanks to Paul Roberti (Rhode Island); Diane Sartanowicz (Massachusetts); Neil Duval and Peter Thurber (New Hampshire); Matt St. Thomas (Connecticut) for their service to the District Executive Council.

We welcome the following new State Presidents to the Executive Council: Alan Segee (Rhode Island); Sue Guyer (Massachusetts); Tate Erickson (New Hampshire) and Tim Speicher (Connecticut).

5. District One By-law changes

The following by-law was voted favorably by the membership, but was not able to be enacted, because it did not have a two-thirds vote of the entire membership. At the District One meeting in Valley Forge, the membership present instructed the Executive Council to enact the by-law.

District One By-laws Article 10 section (a)

These By-laws may be altered, amended, supplemented or repealed:
After changes submitted and approved by the Executive Council, are submitted to the members and approved by a two-thirds of the voting membership that are in attendance, at a District business meeting (provided that the proposed changes have appeared as a printed agenda item), or by a two-thirds of the returned ballots in a mail/electronic vote.

6. EATA By-law changes-
President-Elect Election

At the EATA Business meeting in Valley Forge, a change was made in the EATA
by-laws, allowing elections for President-Elect to be by District when any District has won
two consecutive elections.

What does this mean to District One? The upcoming election for EATA President-Elect
will consist of District One candidates only. This is a tremendous opportunity for anybody
looking to move up the leadership chain…

Elections will also be held for EATA Secretary (open to both District One and Two)…go to the EATA Website (www.goeata.org) to get nomination information.

7. NATA By-law changes-
On-line Election in Spring

Following a power point presentation at the District Executive Council and District Membership meetings showing the results of the Governance Task Force and the New NATA “Involve-Evolve” initiatives, it was the wishes of the Executive Council to bring the following NATA by-law changes to the entire District membership, instead of voting on these revisions at the District meeting…the by-laws to be changed are:

* To enlarge the presidential nominating committee to include all eligible
presidential candidates not seeking nomination. (This includes current and past board members going back four years from the time of nominations.) Those who have declared candidacy shall not serve on the nominations committee and shall not vote. Replacements for those individuals shall be selected from their respective District executive boards.

* To amend the NATA Bylaws to reflect the new term limits for district directors. Directors will serve one two-year, renewable once.
Note: Each district should update its Bylaws with the new limits.

* To change the NATA presidential term to a single three-year term.
Note: This will become effective after incoming President Albohm’s service.

Out of 1650 certified athletic trainers in District One, and 155 were in attendance at Valley Forge, only 30 members attended the District meeting (2%)…Overall Athletic Training Students from District One out-numbered ATCs in Valley Forge (175-155)…

The District will post the power point on the web page on March 1st, as well as
Prospective by-law changes…on-line voting will take place in late May on the District One website, following State meetings, so results will be available at the June NATA Board of Directors Meeting…

NATA has initiated a leadership development program to help members become leaders for the Association as well as in their careers and in society in general. Titled StarTRACK, the program will be aimed at young professionals or those just starting as a volunteer in the Association ‘world.’ Two appointees will be selected from each district. It is a rigorous program of self-study that will be tracked by NATA; two years will be allowed for completion. It is intended for emerging leaders- not previous office holders.
