In my last "Notes" to the Membership, I mistakenly promoted Tim Tourville to President of the VAAT about three months too soon. I apologize to both him and presiding VAAT Jim Murdock, who stays in charge of the Vermont membership until June...The Vermont Association of Athletic Trainers will be hosting the Northern New England Athletic Training Conference (formerly referred to as the Tri-State Athletic Training Conference), on June 15th and 16th, at the Lake Morey Resort, in Fairlee, VT.

5.    Info on Parade Magazine Article- April 15th

Here’s the message that Ellen Satlof of the NATA sent out to all the members who emailed her about the Parade magazine issue of April 15th: Since so many of you have contacted NATA regarding last Sunday's Parade article, we wanted to provide you with an update.  As you know, we have been in communication with the editorial staff, and by late Monday, the online version of the story was corrected. We’ve received an apology from the writer, as well as the managing editor, which plans to run a fitness column in a future issue that clarifies the important differences between athletic trainers and personal trainers. Here’s an excerpt from his letter:

“Many thanks for your e-mail regarding our April 15, 2007 "What People Earn" issue, which was forwarded to me. We've heard from a number of readers who also questioned the inclusion of athletic trainers in the "The Hottest Jobs (No College Degree Required)" box featured in our cover story. I've reviewed the copy with our fact-checking department, and you are indeed correct: the list should have said "personal trainers" not "athletic trainers." We apologize for any misunderstanding this may have caused.  We recognize the advanced education and additional levels of training required to pursue a successful career as an athletic trainer.” For the record, we make every effort to ensure the accuracy of all our articles and columns. On rare occasions, though, errors happen. This was one of those occasions - and it is already serving as an object lesson for our fact-checking department. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We've enjoyed working with the National Athletic Trainers' Association on other similar stories, and we look forward to using NATA as a valued resource for future articles.”

On behalf of NATA, thank you for your continued commitment to the profession and for your diligence in ensuring athletic trainers are accurately portrayed in the           media and in the eyes of consumers and other health care professionals.

            Ellen Satlof- NATA Public Relations

6.    Bobby Gunn Student Leadership Award for NATA- Anaheim 2007

The NATA has established the Bobby Gunn Athletic Training Student Leadership Award to recognize one of the true pioneers in athletic training-and to give deserving athletic training student’s assistance in attending NATA Annual Meetings...

Gunn was the NATA's First President, and passed away in March...his legacy is noted in the April edition of the NATA News...the award will be a $500 travel stipend to the upcoming Annual Meeting in Anaheim...the stipend will be applied to hotel, airfare and/or registration...NATA plans to give one award per District (depending on deserving applicants) for a total of 10 awards...

The NATA College and University Athletic Training Students' Committee will determine the winners with District input...undergraduate or entry-level master's students who are members of the NATA and have never attended an NATA Annual Meeting before are eligible...

Students applying need to complete a one-page essay including the student's leadership involvement in athletic training, career goals, how this stipend can help advance these goals, and demonstrating a clear understanding of  Bobby Gunn's impact on the profession...students will also fill out a biographical form...

Eligible athletic training students can apply on-line and receive the necessary forms and information at www.nata.org ...all entries- both on-line and paper- must be received at the NATA National Office in Dallas, TX no later that May 11, 2007---NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED!!!
