1. District Vote on Dues Increase- Legislative Fund

The District One Executive Council met in January at the EATA Annual Meeting in Boston. With concerns on upcoming legislations in several states, the Council looked for avenues to establish funding for those states, in addition to Legislative Discretionary Grants granted by the NATA.

It was the motion of the Council to establish a dues increase of $5.00 per certified member ($2.50 per student member) to establish a “Legislative SuperFund” that would assist states that are near passage of legislative acts. This fund would be in a money-market account that would bear interest and would be readily available when needed, under the control of the District Treasurer.

While a straw poll at the District One Meeting was positive- this will need District approval before enactment. We will have an on-line vote on this motion from May 15-30…voting instruction will be sent to all District One members soon.

2. Boston Marathon Athletic Training Student Conference- 4-19-09

I want to congratulate the athletic training students at Boston University for hosting the inaugural Boston Marathon Athletic Training Student Conference on Sunday, April 19th.

This event is being sponsored by Johnson & Johnson and hosted by Boston University, the Boston Athletic Association, Children’s Hospital of Boston, Boston University’s Sargent College and the BU Society of Athletic Training Students

The aim of this conference is to educate the student marathon volunteers regarding the health care demands related to the coverage of endurance events, such as the BAA’s Boston Marathon. Additionally, athletic training students from all over the country will have an opportunity to meet each other and discuss experiences and ideas. Finally, everyone will get a chance to head down to the finish line to help set up and learn about the health care systems in place for a large, world-class event.

Info has gone out to all ATEP programs…for more info, and to see if there is still room still available, please contact Jenna Cherenzia at jmcher@bu.edu with any questions or concerns.

3. New Hampshire Musculoskeletal Institute Awards Summer AT Camp Scholarship

The 2009 Bertrand & Blanche Letendre Student Athletic Training Summer School Scholarship has been awarded to Rosemary Wiser. Ms. Wiser is a junior at Gould Academy in Bethel, ME. This scholarship provides funds for students interested in careers in the sports medicine field of athletic training to attend a summer camp focused on athletic training. She has shown her interest in the field working as an AT student with Gould's certified athletic trainer, Derek Allison, ATC, PES.

The New Hampshire Musculoskeletal Institute is a non-profit organization established to promote, conduct, coordinate and disseminate musculoskeletal research and education and to ultimately improve musculoskeletal health care.
