Re : Notes from Stoney
Hi Folks- The midway point of summer finds good weather, good times with good friends and the realization that there is no summer break when you’re the Director…a lot is happening at the District and National levels…please check the August, 2007 edition of the NATA News and read President Chuck Kimmel’s Address to the membership on “Embracing Change”…
The demographics of our membership are changing…40% of the attendees at the Annual Meeting were between ages 18 -24…our athletic training students are communicating more through technology…the NATA is looking to grow with the member’s needs…and I need to hear what is important to you, the members…
I have instructed Tim Weston to contact the suspended members of District One and encourage them to stay active at the State, District and National level…I need to listen to the “baby boomers”, as well as the “Generation X and Y ‘ers” and make sure that everyone has a voice and a grasp on a relevant NATA…
I will be traveling to campuses through the fall, and look to stop by fields and gyms to solicit opinions and comments…I want to listen on how we can make the District and the NATA work for you…
We have elections for National and District leaders…stay tuned for info on how your voice can be heard…
And now…here are the latest items of interest…

- Sad News- Fritz Massmann Passes Away
The opening of the 2008 NATA Meeting in Anaheim was tempered by the news of the passing of Fritz Massmann, past District One Director and a member of the NATA Hall of Fame. Fritz passed away on June 24th after a period of declining health.
Fritz was the former Head Athletic Trainer at Boston College and the New York Nets, as well as a roller derby official. He was living in Babylon, NY at the time of his passing.
The District extends its thoughts and prayers to the Massmann family.
Over the past year, the District has lost three members of its Hall of Fame Family- Walter Grockowski, Joe Stanitis and Fritz Massmann. Ironically, this trio was all inducted into the NATA Hall of Fame during the same year- 1984.
- Good News
Congratulations to UMaine-Fort Kent Athletic Trainer Sara Kay Michaud (Pittinger) and husband, Donald, on the birth of their son, Connor Joseph Michaud on June 7th (8:55 pm, 7 lb. 12.3 oz., 20 ¼ “ long). The family is doing well.
- Update on Frank Mastrangelo
Frank Mastrangelo, Head Athletic Trainer at the Dexter School in Brookline, MA is turning a medical scare into a testimonial to his dad, who passed away from a stroke recently.
Driving home from a summer camp with his kids a few weeks ago, Frank experienced some hearing loss and weakness in his right hand. After evaluations at a regional hospital, and then Mass. General Hospital, Frank was diagnosed with a mild stroke. His prognosis is good, and he even worked the Bay State Games in July…in his words, “I dodged the bullet”…
He is currently training with the MGH Train to End Stroke Program, and plans to run a half-marathon for the American Stroke Association in memory of his dad. Donations can be made to support Frank’s dedicated run at http://ttes.disney2008.kintera.org/mastrangelo

- District One By-law Changes
A recent review of the District One by-laws brought some issues to the Executive Council. The membership that attended the District Meeting at NATA-Anaheim 2008 voted the Executive Council to make a technical change to the election procedure, allowing an election of more that two candidates to win by plurality of the votes casts.
We will be posting a by-law revision in September, looking to change the way by-laws are approved. Presently, a two-thirds vote of the membership of the District is needed to adopt a change. The revision will allow a two-thirds vote of the members present at a meeting to adopt a change. The District will vote on this change during the on-line election in October.
- Athletic Training Student Representation on
District One Executive Council
The District One Executive Council has always welcome the voice of the athletic training
student. In this regard, we allow the six New England representatives of the EATA
Student Delegation to attend the Winter Executive Council meeting at the EATA

In the future, the student delegates will select one member to represent all
District One athletic training students at the District One Executive Council meeting at the NATA Annual Meeting. All student delegates will be non-voting members of the Council.

NATAPAC, a Political Action Committee connected to the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, is a federal group that will provide campaign contributions to approved candidates on behalf of NATA. NATAPAC will give primarily to candidates for the United States Senate or United States House of Representatives. It is a nonpartisan group.
Separately incorporated, NATAPAC operates under its own bylaws and is governed by the NATAPAC Board, comprising the NATA President, Finance Committee Chair, Board Liaison to the Governmental Affairs Committee, Governmental Affairs Committee Chair and Council on Revenue Chair.
NATAPAC has two committees: Fundraising and Review.
The Fundraising Committee includes the chairs of NATA’s Clinical/Industrial/Corporate Athletic Trainers’ Committee, College University Athletic Trainers’ Committee and Secondary School Athletic Trainers’ Committee. Each of these chairs may appoint a current committee person to serve on the Fundraising Committee.
The Review Committee is responsible for reviewing requests for federal campaign contributions and making recommendations to the NATAPAC Board of Directors. This has one representative from the Governmental Affairs Committee, NATA’s federal lobbyist and NATA’s governmental affairs manager.
Per FEC restrictions, NATAPAC will only accept contributions from certified members of the NATA.
